As of today the head cabinetry is torn apart and we will be cutting into the deck to replace what seems to be rotted decking. When the port forward lower is tightened up the deck bulges at the chain plate. so the plan is to identify the rotted area, cut it out from below and glass it back together. The water maker is also ready to be un-assemble when the new membrane arrives. All things point to a failed membrane as the reason for its failure during Transpac. will post more information as it becomes available. Also on the list of items for this winter are re-plumbing the head to include vented loops where appropriate, glassing over possibly four through hulls, replacing the others with flush closing units and then attaching the plumbing that now is connected to 7 openings down to 3. Installation of a sump in the bilge for the head sink and shower sump; this will correct several annoying problems while under sail and help keep the head smelling much better. I have removed and resealed all of the windows, replaced the two opening ports and am happy to say no more leaks....that is at least under the hose and rain test we will see when out in the ocean pounding into waves. I am half way through sealing all the chain plates as well, I have removed all of the port side, opened up the holes in the deck, filled the old screw holes with epoxy and resealed they also seem to be holding up to rain and the hose.

Spring Haul Out 2011

Now that Transpac is done and I'm not worried if Team Hassle knows what my bottom looks like Ill post a few pictures. Peregrine was in the yard for five weeks and got a new spinnaker car and track (Harken captive ball bearings), new stripes and an amazing bottom. We sanded to barrier coat fixed some blisters and a nasty crack we found down the center line just forward of the keel which ran about 3 feet and was up to an inch deep in places. We then sprayed five coats of Balto Plate and burnished it to a mirror finish. Peregrine and crew had a great start hitting the line with full speed and within seconds of the gun. After the first day we had the lead in the Aloha class and stayed in front for 3 more until we had to retire. On the fourth day during our charging routine the water maker would not produce good product, we tried for two days to repair the unit but were unsuccessful. We wont know for sure until we get the boat home and tear the unit apart but the initial diagnosis is either a failed brine seal or oil in the membrane. during the eight days at sea we racked up over a 1000 miles and had allot of fun. At the time we withdrew we were one day away from crossing the Pacific Ridge and deploying our chutes. We nailed every milestone up to that point and were in the position relative to our competitors and the course that we planned. When we turned back to Long Beach it was with our heads held high and our hearts down low. I cant thank the crew (Dan Symonds, Randy Doull, Jim Brenden, Ferenc Feher and Shannon Hunt) enough for the incredible efforts they put forth prior to and during the race. In the midst of preparing for the race a few other projects got added. The first was the replacement of the exhaust riser as the old one failed and I figured it was time to do it right. I had an all stainless steel riser and flange fabricated at work and the difference in engine performance is quite noticeable. During one of the winter storms the wind lifted our canoe off the dock and slammed it into the stanchions and stern rail necessitating their removal and repair along with making provisions to run the 3/8" cable for the satellite phone. While getting ready to install the new instruments over the companion way I took the time to repair the hatch slides and install a new grab rail in the cabin on the center line. I also resealed the traveler and fresh varnish on all the trim that had to come up in the process. Now to the work for race preparation:

* Iridium satellite phone installed and connected to the PC
* New Nexus instruments and flush mounted thru hulls
* Expedition software and PC setup connected to the Nexus server
* Removal of the engine raw water intake scoop and replacement with a flush mount
* Relocation of the Emergency DC panel from the electrical panel
* Fabrication and installation of a new stove top
* Fabrication and installation of a foot ramp at the helm
* Removal and rebuild of the steering pedestal and all associated hardware
* Installation of a foot pump for Sea water at the galley
* Plumbing fix to isolates galley sinks depending on tack
* Sea Cock for in-head access for the head
* Rebuilt the head
* Replaced cabin and galley lights with dual function red/white LED lights
* Red LED chart light
* Installation of Spectra Ventura MPS water maker and water tank
* Bulkhead holes from old Signet instruments filled
* Mast tuned

* In April she will be back in the yard for normal bottom work and a new Phil's Foil rudder, at which time we will also repair the worn rudder post bushings.

* Pick up of a used 1.5 oz. spinnaker, two new spinnakers, and a new storm tri sail.

This year the Oregon Offshore Race (Astoria OR, to Victoria CN, 193 miles) is May 12-15th and will be our shake down cruise before heading to LA for the start of 2200 mile LA to Hawail Transpac on July 4th.

Transpac 2011

Peregrine is registered in the 2011 Transpac starting July 4, 2011 in Long Beach, CA and ending in Honolulu HI. I moved it to a pole on the starboard side of the transom. I had the pole fabricated at work and added a tube inside for the fuel vent. It now vents about 9 feet above the water line, again after two years and two issues from water in the fuel tank it was time to correct this problem too. The old vent was located on the transom and in following seas and rough weather water would work its way up the vent and into the fuel tank. I also mounted the stern running light at 10 feet above the water line and made provisions to have the MOB pole mounted as well. In addition I added a weather satellite receiver for my chart plotter.

<img style="WIDTH: 214px;
